Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday morning as part of a corruption investigation.
According to Turkish media reports, Imamoglu is also accused of leading a criminal group, rigging tenders and providing assistance to a terrorist organization.
A large number of police surrounded Imamoglu's home before arresting him. His media advisor, Murat Ongun, confirmed the arrest but did not provide details on the reasons for the arrest.
Imamoglu reacted on the social network X, writing that hundreds of police officers were in front of his house, adding that he would not give in and would continue to stand strong in the face of this pressure.
In addition to Imamoglu's arrest, Turkish authorities have ordered the arrest of around 100 other suspects, including journalists and businessmen, as part of the same corruption investigation. (A2 Televizion)
