A mother is accused of keeping her two-year-old daughter hidden in a suitcase inside the trunk of a bus in New Zealand, believed to have recently returned from Australia.
Detective Inspector Simon Harrison said the 27-year-old had been charged with child abuse and neglect after the girl was found alone inside a suitcase on Sunday at 12.50pm.
Police were called to a bus station in Kaiwaka, 100km north of Auckland, after the driver became concerned about a bag moving during a rest stop. The bag had been stored in a special luggage compartment under the bus seats, which the driver had repacked.
"When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl. The little girl was reported to be very hot, but appeared physically unharmed," New Zealand police said.
It is believed the toddler was in the suitcase for about an hour. The detective on the case also stated that the child is in hospital undergoing an extensive medical evaluation.
The 27-year-old mother remains in custody and will appear in court on Monday. (A2 Televizion)
