The first flight to deport illegal immigrants from the US to the US base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba is scheduled for today, CNN reported, citing US officials familiar with the plan.
The move stems from a memo from President Donald Trump directing the federal government to prepare the U.S. naval base there to house tens of thousands of immigrants. While Guantanamo Bay has an immigrant processing center, it has been used primarily for migrants detained at sea, not brought from the United States.
According to sources for CNN, it is not yet known how long the migrants could be legally held there and what their rights would be while detained. It is also unclear whether the migrants would have access to legal or social services while they are detained at the base.
Senior Trump officials have continued to tout the plan, describing it as a structure designed for criminals.
"It's the perfect place to secure immigrants who are traveling out of our country ... but also hardened criminals," Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at the U.S. southern border on Monday.
Pentagon assets have already been sent to the base to build tents near the migrant operations center to house the migrants. The first tents began going up last week, the sources said.
