Nuclear talks with the US begin in Oman, Iran: We want a fair deal

Iran and the United States have begun talks in Oman over Tehran's nuclear program, the highest-level meeting between the two countries since 2018.

According to foreign media, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Iranian state television that his country wanted a "fair agreement," with his spokesman saying he did not expect the talks to last long.

President Donald Trump withdrew the US from a previous nuclear deal between Iran and world powers in 2018 and has long said he would make a "better" deal.

It is unclear whether the two delegations will sit in the same room, but the talks are seen as an important first step in determining whether an agreement can be reached, as well as a framework for negotiations.

Araghchi has repeatedly stressed that indirect talks were best at this stage, writes A2 CNN.

Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, who leads the American delegation, has only spoken of face-to-face meetings.

But the most important issue is what kind of agreement each side would accept.

Trump sent a letter to Iran's supreme leader via the United Arab Emirates last month, saying he wanted a deal to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and to avert possible military attacks by the US and Israel.

Iran hopes for a deal to limit, but not dismantle, its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

"Our goal is to reach a fair and honest agreement from an equal position, and if the other side also comes from the same position, then hopefully there will be a chance for an initial understanding that will lead to the path of negotiations," Araghchi said, according to A2 CNN. (A2 Televizion)
