Bad weather with torrential rain has hit northern Italy, causing casualties and flooding. Italian media report that in Bardonecchia, a tourist resort 1,300 meters above sea level in the Turin area, a 70-year-old man died after being swept away by water and mud after the Frejus River flooded.
It has not even been two years since a landslide terrorized the city, on the night between August 13 and 14, 2023. And exactly one year after the flood that made it inaccessible for twenty-eight days, three landslides have once again isolated the city at the foot of Gran Paradiso.
Bardonecchia has been scared again by its Frejus river, a raging stream that runs through the city center and that covered the local geography with mud for days in 2023.
According to Italian media, the victim is a 70-year-old man, Franco Chiaffrino, who was seen by several people getting out of his van and disappearing into the water and mud. Firefighters pulled him out lifeless. Meanwhile, in the village, 150 children on holiday at summer camps have been taken to safety in the sports hall, which is also available to anyone in need, and there is a red no-access zone along the stream. Firefighters are busy clearing the streets of debris and trying to make them safe.
Ten people were evacuated from a building and four others were rescued from their cars. The operations were made difficult by the evolution of adverse weather conditions. Numerous videos published on social media show the black water of the river flowing into the streets of the city. Flooding was also recorded on the A32 Turin-Bardonecchia motorway, while the exit to the tourist resort was closed in both directions. The same applies to the state road in the area near the city, which is full of water.
Local authorities ordered people not to leave their homes and not to use cars.
