A man who had recently returned to Pakistan with his family from the US has confessed to shooting and killing his teenage daughter because he was outraged by the content of her TikTok posts.
According to foreign media, the 15-year-old, born in America, was killed on a street in the city of Quetta on Tuesday. The suspect, Anwar ul Haq, initially claimed that she was shot by unknown gunmen, but later confessed to the crime, said a police officer, Babar Baloch.
“So far our investigations show that the family did not approve of (the victim’s) dress, lifestyle and social media contacts,” said another police officer, Zohaib Mohsin. “We have her mobile phone. It is switched off. We are investigating all possibilities, even honour killing,” he added.
The family lived in the US for 25 years and recently returned to Pakistan's Balochistan province. According to Baloch, the father said his daughter started creating "objectionable" content on TikTok while they were still living in the US and that she continued uploading videos after they returned to Pakistan.
Anwar ul Haq's brother-in-law was also arrested on charges of collaboration, writes A2 CNN.
Anwar ul Haq says he is a US citizen, but police have no proof of this other than the suspect's bail. It is not clear whether the US Embassy has been informed of his arrest.
More than 54 million people use TikTok in Pakistan, a country of 241 million people. The government has blocked access to the app several times in recent years, citing "obscene content."
At least 1,000 women are killed every year in Pakistan, most of them by their own relatives, for defiling the family's "honor". (A2 Televizion)
