Sunken vehicle recovered in Lithuania, US soldiers still missing

Rescue teams in Lithuania pulled a sunken military vehicle from a swamp.

It was carrying four American soldiers, who are still missing.

The armored vehicle, an M88 Hercules, was recovered on the morning of March 31, six days after the rescue operation began at the Pabrada military base, near Lithuania's border with Belarus.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Davile Sakaliene said the fate of the four soldiers remains unclear.

"We can't talk about this because, first of all, there is no information yet. Even when we do get information, an agreement has been made that the Americans will be the first to come out with an announcement," Sakaliene told Lithuanian public radio on March 31.

The soldiers' vehicle was found submerged in a swamp at the Pabrade military training ground on March 25.

Hundreds of Lithuanian and American soldiers, along with dozens of vehicles, were involved in his extraction.

Lithuania, a member of NATO and the European Union, is host to more than 1,000 US troops.

US Army Europe and Africa Command said in a statement earlier that the four soldiers were "conducting planned tactical training" when they went missing on March 25.

In the first hours of the rescue operation there were several contradictory statements, including comments from NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who said that soldiers had lost their lives.

Later, a NATO spokeswoman withdrew that statement./ REL (A2 Televizion)
