Ahead of Saudi Arabia meeting, Moscow hit by largest-ever massive drone attack

At least one person has been killed and three others injured in a "massive" drone strike overnight in Moscow and the capital region. The news was announced by regional governor Andrei Vorobyev, who said the victims were in the towns of Vidnoye and Domodedovo, outside the capital. Seven apartments in a residential building were damaged, A2 CNN reports.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin says 73 drones heading towards the city have been shot down. The roof of a building has been damaged by drone debris.

A regional train network has been suspended and flight restrictions have been imposed at two Moscow airports after the attack, one of the largest since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, reports A2 CNN.

The attack comes just hours before a close meeting between representatives from the US and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia, focused on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In a social media post, Governor Vorobyev published photos purportedly showing one of the damaged apartments and burned-out vehicles in what appeared to be a car park in the Moscow region, A2 CNN reports.

He said 12 people, including three children, had to be evacuated from their damaged apartments after the overnight strike.

Flight restrictions were imposed at Moscow's Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports - major transport hubs used by millions of passengers each year.

The Russian Defense Ministry later reported that a total of 337 Ukrainian drones were captured or destroyed overnight in Moscow and nine other Russian regions.

Ukraine has not commented on the matter.

Overnight, Ukrainian officials reported Russian drone attacks on the capital Kiev and several other regions. (A2 Televizion)
