Prince Frederik of Luxembourg passed away on March 1 in Paris, after a long battle with the rare genetic disease POLG. The news was announced by his family on the official website of the POLG Foundation, which Frederik founded in 2022.
"With a broken heart, my wife and I would like to inform you of the passing of our son, founder and creative director of the POLG Foundation, Frederik," his father, Prince Robert of Luxembourg, wrote.
POLG is a genetic mitochondrial disorder that disrupts energy production in cells, causing multiple organ failure, writes A2 CNN. Currently, there is no treatment or cure for this disease.
Despite his health condition, Prince Frederik tried to live with strength and courage. Even in the last days of his life, Frederik continued with his disciplined routine, including Italian language lessons on Duolingo and daily exercise.
Diagnosed with POLG at the age of 14, Frederik knew he would live with an incurable disease. However, he dedicated himself to raising awareness about rare diseases and participated in medical trials in the hope of finding treatments.
A friend of his recently revealed a touching statement that Frederik had made years ago: "I'm happy that I have this disease. Even if I die from it... I know that my parents will save other children."
