"Iberian Peninsula" paralyzed, massive power outage, cyberattack

The Iberian Peninsula has been hit by a massive power outage. The countries affected are Spain and Portugal. A similar problem is also believed to have occurred in the south of France. Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica said it could take six to ten hours to restore power to large parts of the country. The company declined to speculate on the cause of the power outage. However, the Portuguese National Center for Cybersecurity has already issued a statement saying there are no indications that the outage was due to a cyberattack.

Eduardo Prieto, head of operations at Red Eléctrica, however, told reporters that the incident was unprecedented and described it as "extraordinary."

Spain and Portugal were paralyzed by such an event. Madrid and Barcelona are without electricity. Traffic lights and telephone services were out of order mainly in the center of Madrid. According to international media reports, train and rail traffic were also affected throughout Spain.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez immediately traveled to the headquarters of state-owned grid operator Red Eléctrica Española (REE) in Madrid. Sánchez chaired an emergency meeting to coordinate the government's response to the supply crisis.

Accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister María Jesús Montero, Environment Minister Sara Aagesen and Transport Minister Óscar Puente, Sánchez is currently overseeing the work to restore power and the ongoing investigation into the cause of the outage. The head of government instructed the responsible ministries to strengthen their technical teams. (A2 Televizion)
