A 48-year-old man was stopped by Border Force officers at Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom, while travelling to Beirut, after £1 million in cash was found in his suitcases during a search.
Mazen Al Shaar was immediately arrested and appeared at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court on Monday, where he was refused bail. He will appear again in court on April 17 in Isleworth for a preliminary hearing.
Andy Noyes, commander of the National Crime Agency (NCA), said: “Many of the organised crime threats in the UK are linked to the desire for money. This £1m discovery is the result of the excellent work of Border Force officers.”
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior added that the seizure of this amount of money demonstrates the Border Force's commitment to protecting borders and public safety.
Meanwhile, similar cases have been recorded in other countries. In February, authorities at Beirut Airport arrested a passenger from Turkey with $1.4 million in cash. Also in 2023, a group that smuggled 100 million pounds into Dubai was convicted in the United Kingdom. (A2 Televizion)
