Pro-Imamoglu protests, Erdogan reacts: Hypocritical opposition

“The opposition’s attempts to portray its internal conflicts or its problems with the law as the country’s most important issue are the height of hypocrisy,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, a day after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

A prominent opposition figure and his main rival, Imamoglu, was arrested on charges including corruption and aiding terrorism. The main opposition party called it “a coup against the country’s future president,” A2 CNN reported.

His arrest has sparked strong protests across the country. "We have no time for opposition shows, neither on a personal level, nor on a party or alliance level," the Turkish president added.

"The media and the opposition party are unable to respond to the accusations made by the judiciary, both on the diploma issue and on the corruption issue," the Turkish leader added, referring to the accusations against Imamoglu and the fact that a day before his arrest, Istanbul University had canceled the Istanbul mayor's diploma certificate, considering it fake, reports A2 CNN.

A wave of mass protests erupted in Turkey, especially in Ankara, after the arrest of the mayor of Istanbul. Many citizens demonstrated for several hours against the decision, considering it a political attack on the opposition.

Many of them chanted anti-government slogans, with police using various means to disperse the protesters. This led to a physical scuffle between them, which led to the arrest of several demonstrators. (A2 Televizion)
