“We are entering a new era.” With these words, President Emmanuel Macron addressed the French directly this evening from the Elysee, describing how the US has changed its position on the war in Ukraine and threatened Europe with increased trade tariffs.
"I am addressing you this evening, because of the international situation. You are legitimately concerned given the historical events that are taking place. The United States has changed its position on the war in Ukraine. The United States itself wants to impose tariffs on Europe. The terrorist threat. We are entering a new era," Macron said, A2 CNN reports.
In his address to the nation, the French president warned that the security of France and Europe is also threatened by Putin's invasion.
" Who can believe that Russia will stop in Ukraine? Faced with this world at risk, to remain a spectator would be madness. Russia has become a threat to France and Europe. The situation I am describing to you is this, and we must live with it. And the path to peace cannot be without Ukraine. Peace cannot be the capitulation of Ukraine. We cannot forget that Russia began the invasion of Ukraine in 2014," Macron said, according to A2 CNN.
Macron stressed that France, together with Ukraine and other European countries, has prepared a "strong and sustainable plan for peace" and that once peace is achieved, European peacekeepers could be deployed to secure it.
