President Joe Biden approved a federal emergency declaration for California that will authorize funds and resources to fight the wildfires.
"We are prepared to do whatever, and for as long as necessary, to control these fires and help rebuild and make sure we get back to normal." It will be a long road," said President Biden. "It will take time."
The US Department of Defense said it will "work to provide additional personnel and firefighting capabilities" to California for its battle against the wildfires.
Total damage from the fires could reach $57 billion or more, according to an analysis by the Global Weather Center of the company "AccuWeather".
The Los Angeles County Fire Department faced four dangerous wildfires that have claimed at least five lives, burned more than 1,100 buildings and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate.
Two thousand members of the National Guard have been deployed to assist local firefighters.
In Pacific Palisades, the fire raced from house to house, driven by hurricane-force winds. In the same area, firefighters said that the water had run out.
Washington is supporting efforts to fight the California wildfires with four large US Forest Service air tankers, and an additional fifth was announced on the way.
