Serbia is Russia's closest European ally, while President Aleksandar Vučić is one of the main distributors of Moscow's propaganda in the region. This is what is said in the analysis "Russia and the pioneers of autocracy, how the Kremlin is destabilizing Europe", published by the German Friedrich Naumann Foundation.
The author, Thomas Brey, a journalist and professor, mentions that Vucic has met 17 times with his Russian counterpart Putin, and in 2019 he was awarded the Order of Alexander Nevsky in Moscow, which is usually given to major Russian figures. In the analysis, it is emphasized that the regime in Serbia is trying to implement the policy of the "Serbian World", based on a similar project of the "Russian World".
"This Serbian program was one of the causes of the bloody wars during the breakup of Yugoslavia. The national airline Air Serbia still flies several times a week to Moscow and other Russian cities. There is a Russian-Serbian humanitarian center near the city of Nis in the south of Serbia, which critics in the West consider a center for the Russian intelligence services", says the author, according to A2.
The author of the analysis further adds that the pro-government media in Serbia are the main conduits of Russian propaganda, where Russia is exalted and the West is demonized. As it is said, even the highest officials spread pro-Russian and anti-Western narratives, including President Vucic. According to the analysis, the prevailing narrative is that NATO, the US or the EU threaten their nation.
Brey also talks about widespread corruption in Serbia. (A2 Televizion)
