US prosecutor seeks death penalty for Luigi Mangione

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is calling for the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the killer of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare, who was killed on December 4 in New York.

"The murder of Brian Thompson by Mangione, an innocent man and father of two young children, was a premeditated, cold-blooded murder that shocked America. After careful consideration, I have instructed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we implement President Trump's agenda to stop violent crime and make America safe again," Bondi said in a statement.

Bondi's request for Mangione is in line with a directive issued by the attorney general on his first day in office. In the directive, he outlined reinstating the death penalty and lifting the federal moratorium on executions ordered by the Biden administration in 2021. The first Trump administration had reactivated the federal death penalty after a 17-year hiatus, and in the final months of his term, 13 inmates were executed.

Mangione is accused of killing Thompson on December 4 in New York. The 26-year-old Italian-American from Baltimore has pleaded not guilty to charges ranging from first-degree murder with the intent to commit terrorism to unlawful possession of a firearm.

Mangione, the 26-year-old Italian-American from Baltimore, continues to maintain his innocence as his fundraising campaign has surpassed $500,000. In a historic decision that could change criminal justice in the United States, the eyes of America are on this shocking trial. (A2 Televizion)
