Just as Ukrainian forces are losing ground in the pocket of Russia's Kursk region they occupied last year, they have staged a hitherto little-publicized incursion into the neighboring Belgorod region, according to Russian military bloggers.
Foreign media reports that several Russian military correspondents reported today that Ukrainian troops were inside Belgorod and were fighting there with Russian forces.
Neither Kiev nor Moscow have confirmed the reports, although the Russian Defense Ministry said 10 days ago that its forces had thwarted five Ukrainian attempts to cross the border into Belgorod.
The Ukrainian military has not commented on any strikes in the Belgorod region by Kiev forces, although this may be for operational security reasons, writes A2 CNN.
Andrii Kovalenko, an official at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, suggested in a statement earlier this month that Ukrainian forces could operate in the Belgorod region, "neutralizing threats" from Russian forces that could mass near the border.
And Rybar, a Russian military blog with 1.3 million subscribers, said there had been heavy clashes in a settlement called Popovka, with each side striking the other with drones. Another Telegram account, Two Majors, said Russian forces were conducting "defensive operations."
"There are ongoing attacks on the concentrations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but the enemy still has serious offensive potential in this direction and has not abandoned plans for further advances, including in new areas of the front," the statement said.
A third military blog, Arkhangel Spetsnaza, reported fighting in a village called Demidovka and said several Ukrainian soldiers were surrounded there.
Meanwhile, the reports have not been independently confirmed. (A2 Televizion)
