The Italian Prime Minister spoke to British media after the Ukraine summit in Paris yesterday.
According to foreign media, in an interview with the Financial Times, Giorgia Meloni said that the idea of choosing between the US and Europe is "childish".
It is "in everyone's interest" to overcome tensions in transatlantic relations, she added, describing some reactions to Donald Trump as "very political".
"I'm a conservative. Trump is a Republican leader," she said, writes A2 CNN.
"Of course I'm closer to him than many others, but I understand a leader who defends his national interests," she continued.
"I defend the interests of my country," she continued.
She said she hopes Trump's "confrontational" approach to European defense would force the continent to take responsibility.
"I like to say that crisis always hides an opportunity," she added, writes A2 CNN.
She is also skeptical about the proposal for a European "security force" for Ukraine.
