At least three planes registered to the Iranian government left Iran on Wednesday, despite an air blockade declared by the Iranian Civil Aviation Authority. Their destination was Oman, a country that has historically served as a key mediator in nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, A2 CNN reports.
According to Reuters sources, an Iranian delegation has landed in Muscat, although the identities of those on board have not been made public so far. Iranian officials have not confirmed an official trip. This has increased speculation about a possible escape of Iranian officials.
Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi denied rumors that he had led a negotiating delegation abroad, calling the information untrue.
Meanwhile, Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations reacted sharply to statements by US President Donald Trump, who invited Iranian leaders to return to the negotiating table.
In a statement posted on social media, the Iranian mission said: "No Iranian official has ever sought to bow to the White House. The only thing more despicable than his lies are his cowardly threats to 'eliminate' the Supreme Leader of Iran. Iran does not negotiate under pressure, does not accept peace under threat, and certainly not with a failed warmonger."
The movements of Iranian aircraft towards Oman, despite the closure of airspace, are fueling speculation that silent talks may be taking place behind closed doors. (A2 Televizion)
