A 7-year-old Ukrainian girl who had traveled to Israel to receive treatment for leukemia after the Russian attack on her country was killed by an Iranian airstrike in the city of Bat Yam, south of Tel Aviv, on Sunday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced in a statement on the X network (formerly Twitter).
The victim, Nastya Borik, had come to Israel in December 2022, along with her family, after she needed urgent treatment for acute leukemia. According to Herzog, Nastya was killed along with five family members: her mother Mariia (30), her grandmother Lena (60), and her two cousins, Ilya (13) and Konstantin (9). Ukrainian authorities confirmed the deaths of their five citizens, but did not provide further details, writes A2 CNN.
President Herzog said that Nastya had begun to show improvement with treatment, but the disease had returned in an aggressive form. The bone marrow transplant failed, and the leukemia came back even stronger. “She came looking for life. But instead of life, she was killed,” said Herzog.
Nastya's mother, Mariia Pieshkurova, has been documenting her daughter's journey on Instagram, sharing painful and hopeful moments. She shared that Nastya was first diagnosed in August 2022. In her last post, on May 27, Mariia wrote: "I will save my daughter, no matter the cost... Because no one else will fight like I fight. Because Nastya is my life. She is all I have. And as long as I breathe, I scream, I pray, I believe, I fight."
President Herzog also said that Nastya's father, Artem Borik, is a member of the Ukrainian army and is currently on the front lines, fighting against Russian forces. (A2 Televizion)
