Life-threatening! Storm Éowyn hits Great Britain and Ireland

A rare weather warning is in place for Scotland, meaning there is a risk to life, as Storm Éowyn batters Great Britain and Ireland. British media reports that almost a million customers are without power across the island of Ireland, including 240,000 in Northern Ireland where a red warning ended at 2pm local time. In the Republic of Ireland, 725,000 customers are without power.

Millions of people are being asked to stay at home across the UK and travel disruption is widespread, with roads blocked by fallen trees, flights cancelled and rail services halted.

More than 1,000 flights, or 20% of all flights, operating to or from airports in the UK and Ireland have been cancelled today, data from aviation analytics company Cirium shows.

Airports in Dublin, Edinburgh, Heathrow and Glasgow were the worst affected by Storm Éowyn, the company revealed. Edinburgh had cancelled all flights until 5pm local time, warning that there could be further disruption.

Strong winds of more than 160km/h have been recorded in Drumalbin in Scotland, the strongest in the UK today.

The fastest speed ever recorded in the UK is 228 km/h at Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire in eastern Scotland, on 13 February 1989.

Earlier, British media reported that the Republic of Ireland had reported a wind speed of 114 mph (183 km/h) on its west coast.
