US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an exclusive interview with CNN that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should apologize after his meeting with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office turned into what Rubio described as a "fiasco," as he questioned whether the Ukrainian leader truly wants peace in the country's war with Russia.
Rubio's remarks underscored the serious damage done to U.S.-Ukraine relations at the end of a week when the leaders of the United Kingdom and France visited Washington to point out to Trump that the U.S. should mediate to end the war and not prioritize the interests of Russian President Vladimir Putin over those of Zelensky.
Asked about comments by South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, usually a strong supporter of Ukraine, who said after the meeting that Zelensky should consider resigning, Rubio responded that Trump "hasn't taken any position on that."
"What the President said is, 'Let him come back when he's ready to make peace,'" Rubio quoted. The Secretary of State added that Trump's stance on Putin remains "trust, but verify."
