Ukraine's presence in the Russian Kursk region has deteriorated significantly, threatening the only territorial leverage that Kiev was aiming to use in future negotiations with Russia.

As military bloggers report, Russian troops stormed the town of Sudzha on Sunday after special forces used a gas pipeline to surprise Ukrainian units as part of a major offensive to drive them out of the Kursk region.

Reportedly, the special forces marched 15 km inside the pipeline and spent several days there before storming the area.

Sudzha is a key node on a pipeline that once carried Russian natural gas to Ukraine's transmission systems and then to Europe. Ukrainian troops have occupied about 1,300 square kilometers in Russia's Kursk region since last August, but control has been shrinking in recent days. (A2 Televizion)
