Russian forces have advanced further, taking control of two frontline settlements in the eastern Donetsk region.
The news was announced by the Russian Defense Ministry. A ministry report said Russian forces had captured the village of Zelene Pole, located between Pokrovsk, the focal point of Russian attacks in the region, and Novosilka, a settlement that the Russian military said it captured late last month, writes A2 CNN.
Also captured, according to the Russian report, was the village of Dachne, west of the town of Kurakhove, which the Russian military said it also captured last month. The town had been the subject of weeks of fierce fighting. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Army said in a report on Friday that the two villages were among 11 settlements under Russian attack in the Pokrovsk sector. But it did not say they were under Russian control. The Ukrainian military blog DeepState, which tracks frontline positions based on open-source reports, said this week that Russian forces had made advances near Zelene Pole and Dachne.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also spoke about the worsening situation in Ukraine. Present on the second day of the Munich Conference, Scholz said that, “A Russian victory or a destruction of Ukraine would not create peace. But this would further jeopardize peace and stability – in Europe and beyond, peace will only be possible “if Ukraine’s sovereignty is ensured,” he said.
Chancellor Scholz also called for an adjustment of the EU's Stability Pact in favor of higher defense spending. He proposed a corresponding exemption "for all investments in defense equipment that are above our previous NATO target of two percent," Scholz said. (A2 Televizion)
