Russia urges its citizens to avoid traveling to the West

Russia announced that relations with the United States are so confrontational that Russian citizens should not travel to the United States, Canada and some European Union countries, as they risk being prosecuted by American authorities.

Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that relations with the US are on the verge of collapse.

"In the context of the growing confrontation... travel to the United States - privately or for official purposes - carries serious risks," Zakharova said, Reuters reports.

"We urge you to continue to refrain from travel to the United States and its allied satellite states - including, primarily, Canada and European Union countries with some exceptions - during these holidays," she said.

Russian and American diplomats say relations between the two countries are worse than at any time since the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 because of disagreements over the war in Ukraine.

They reached the height of the crisis last month, when the US and UK allowed Ukraine to use their missiles to strike Russian territory. Consequently, Russia lowered the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons.

Russia and the US constantly accuse each other of arresting their own citizens on trumped-up charges. REL (A2 Televizion)
