The US says it has killed the leader of the Islamic State (IS) Abu Yusif in Syria, writes A2 CNN.

US Central Command (Centcom) forces said they carried out an airstrike targeting Yusif, who was located in the east of the country.

Foreign media, citing US officials, said another IS operative was also killed in the attack.

This attack was carried out in an area previously controlled by the Syrian regime and Russian forces.

Centcom Commander General Michael Erik Kurilla said: "As previously stated, the United States - working with allies and partners in the region - will not allow ISIS to take advantage of the current situation in Syria and rebuild."

"IS aims to release from custody over 8,000 ISIS operatives currently held in facilities in Syria," he added.

"We will aggressively target these leaders and operatives, including those attempting to conduct operations outside of Syria," the statement concluded. (A2 Televizion)
