The German Institute for Infectious Diseases "Robert Koch Institut" sees signs of the beginning of a flu wave in Germany. According to the latest RKI report, since the beginning of December, the number of infection cases has increased significantly. Even in recent years, January has been the period in which the number of infections has increased significantly. Simply put, a flu wave is when influenza viruses of type A or B are found in one of the analyzes of every five patients.

40 dead from infection with the flu virus

According to the RKI report, the number of hospitalizations of people diagnosed with flu has also increased. In the period from December 2 to 30, about 18 percent of patients diagnosed with flu were hospitalized. Whereas from December 30 to today, this figure is about 27 percent. The figures refer to the cases reported in the RKI. An increase in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections has also been noted in recent weeks.

It is also announced for people who have died due to flu infection. So far for the winter season 2024/25 in RKI, 40 deaths from infection with the flu virus have been reported.
