White House: Trump expects Zelensky to sign minerals deal

White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt was asked about the status of President Donald Trump's proposed mineral deal with Ukraine.

According to foreign media, Leavitt says there have been "no significant updates" on the agreement since Trump spoke to the media yesterday, but she reiterates the President's position.

"It is important that this agreement is signed, he expects Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sign the agreement," she says, writes A2 CNN.

"This is to recover the American tax dollars that have funded Ukraine's national defense and it is also 'wonderful' for the Ukrainian people who have been put through hell because of this war," she further said.

"It will create a lasting economic partnership as Ukraine has to rebuild its country from this brutal war," Leavitt continued.

Recall that Ukraine has faced pressure from the Trump administration to sign an agreement for access to its rare minerals.

Trump has said that US military and economic aid to Ukraine has reached about $500 billion and in return, he wants the US to have access to Ukraine's minerals worth this amount.

A Ukrainian source told Sky News that Zelenskyy is "not ready" to sign the US deal due to a "number of problematic issues", with a draft claiming the US had demanded a 50% share of Ukraine's rare earth minerals. (A2 Televizion)
