The shadows of the priest child abuse scandal have returned to Italy. In Brescia, a 48-year-old priest is suspected of sexually abusing minors who participated in his parish activities from 2013 to 2014.
Catholic priest Ciro Panigara was placed under house arrest today on charges of sexual abuse of minors.
The investigation into him began last year, following a complaint from a teenager who "opened up" to a new teacher.
The local bishop had decided to remove the priest from his parish last January, shortly after the investigation began.
"For all of us, the protection of our fellow citizens always comes first," said the region's Catholic bishop, Pierantonio Tremolada.
As the newspaper Corriere della Sera writes, "the faithful of the San Paolo area, where Father Ciro Panigara served, have been left stunned and shocked by this whole story." (A2 Televizion)
