Powerful storms hit the US, at least 16 deaths reported

Powerful storms that have battered the central and eastern United States have killed at least 16 people, officials said.

Meanwhile, the US National Weather Service has warned of major flooding in the coming days.

A series of powerful storms that have hit from Arkansas to Ohio have damaged buildings, flooded roads and rail lines, and spawned dozens of tornadoes in recent days.

Tennessee has been hit hardest by the extreme weather, and on Saturday authorities said ten people had died in the western part of the US state.

Two people have died in flooding in Kentucky, according to the state's governor, Andy Beshear. He said a child was among the victims.

Photos posted on social media and by local media outlets showed extensive damage across all states affected by the storms, including destroyed homes, fallen trees and downed power lines.

"Major flooding is expected" on Sunday in parts of the central and eastern regions, the US National Weather Service said, adding that "people and property are at significant risk."

Two more deaths were recorded in Missouri and one in Indiana as a result of the storms.

More than 100,000 people were left without power in Arkansas and Tennessee on Sunday morning.

Scientists say global warming is affecting climate disruption, causing extreme weather to become more frequent and severe.

Last year, the United States set a new record for high temperatures, while the country was also hit by a wave of devastating tornadoes and hurricanes./ REL (A2 Televizion)
