"American economic independence" began with a signature. President Donald Trump formalized the imposition of tariffs, at least 10 percent, on the entire world, officially starting what is being considered a trade war. He took to the podium a list of the most affected countries, ranking China at the top and then the European Union.
“My American friends, this is Emancipation Day. We have waited a long time. April 2, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s fortunes were restored, and the day we began to make America great again. For decades, our country has been plundered, raped, and robbed by nations near and far. As steelworkers, auto workers, farmers, and skilled craftsmen, they have suffered truly in anguish as foreign leaders have stolen our jobs, foreign crooks have plundered what was once the beautiful American dream,” Trump said.
The tariff on China is 34%, the European Union is affected by 20%, Britain by 10%, South Korea by 25% and Japan by 24%, while there are other countries such as Cambodia, Madagascar or Myanmar that are hit with around 50% trade tariffs. With this move, Trump aims to force the affected countries to negotiate new economic agreements, writes A2 CNN.
“We are putting a 10% floor. Do you see this list? This goes on with other countries with tariffs that will help us rebuild our economy and prevent theft. I consider it somewhat reciprocal, because it is not completely so. We have only put half of what we are taking away. If they complain, and they want the tariffs to be zero, then go ahead and build your product in America, because you will have no tariffs. My call is this: remove the tariffs, lower the barriers and stop manipulating your currency.”
Meanwhile, Trump has already imposed 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports. He also imposed a 25% tax on imports of non-American vehicles and auto parts. (A2 Televizion)
