The 54% tariff on Chinese products entering the US is undoubtedly large and will severely impact Chinese companies trying to sell in the US market.
The Chinese are threatening countermeasures that will also hurt American companies targeting the huge Chinese market.
But, in a way, these moves by Donald Trump are also a gift to Xi Jinping.
Xi is presenting his country as a supporter of free trade, as a defender of multilateral institutions and is drawing comparisons with the US, which is seen as a country that is violating these principles, writes the BBC.
Just last week, the Chinese leader sat down with the CEOs of major international companies – including many from Europe – and the picture was clear: the US under Trump is chaos, destruction of trade and national interest, while China under Xi is stability, free trade and global cooperation.
