Russia-Ukraine meeting at the Vatican, Lavrov reacts

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has called a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian delegations at the Vatican "unrealistic." This was reported by international media, according to which Lavrov stated that two Orthodox countries cannot meet in a Catholic country, while accusing the Kiev authorities of destroying the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

“It is not elegant for Orthodox countries to discuss in a Catholic forum the issues of eliminating the root causes of the conflict.” Among these “root causes” was what he called “the path of destruction of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church” by the Kiev authorities.

"I think it would not be easy for the Vatican itself to receive delegations from two Orthodox countries under these conditions," the head of Russian diplomacy stressed.

The Kremlin said that "there is still no decision or agreement on the future negotiating platform" for talks between Russia and Ukraine and that "this decision cannot be made by one side alone," but "requires the consent of both," Dmitry Peskov said on possible negotiations in the Vatican and on the possible existence of an agreement in principle for new talks in Istanbul.

The European bishops, after a meeting with Leo XIV, regarding a possible mediation by the Vatican, underlined that "we did not go into the details of concrete proposals, but we really focused on the importance of working for a peace that is a just peace, this balance between peace and justice seems to be a very important thing in his thinking".

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin told Italian media that there is no date for any peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to be held at the Vatican.
