Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced their intention to propose the first $1 trillion military budget in United States history, causing a sensation in the political and military establishment in Washington.
During a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said the upcoming budget will be "close to $1 trillion," emphasizing that "we have to build up our military, because there are a lot of dark forces out there."
For his part, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in a post on 'X' on Monday night, confirmed these plans, writing: "Coming soon: the first trillion-dollar Department of Defense budget. We will use every taxpayer dollar wisely."
Hegseth's statement was accompanied by a photo with the slogan "Rebuild & Ready," referring to the administration's goal to rapidly strengthen the operational capability of the US armed forces.
The Trump-Hegseth proposal represents a drastic increase over this year's budget of $892 billion, which covered not only the Pentagon but also nuclear weapons development and security programs at other federal agencies.
Despite the increase, Hegseth plans to cut about 8% from individual branches of the Armed Forces budgets to redirect funds to modernization programs. In this context, tens of thousands of civilian jobs are planned to be eliminated in the Department of Defense worldwide, as well as the consolidation of military bases in the US and abroad.
Trump may not have specified whether the $1 trillion figure refers exclusively to the Pentagon or the national defense budget as a whole (which also includes other services) , but projections are for total defense spending to exceed $900 billion in the new budget. His statement, however, confirmed the goal of a historic increase.
"Nobody has ever seen anything like this before," Trump said. "We are careful with the cost, but the military is something we have to rebuild. We have to be strong."
At the same time, Republican lawmakers and senators are considering a separate boost to the defense budget through a temporary package of up to $150 billion. A $150 billion increase has been proposed in the Senate, while in the House of Representatives there is a proposal for $100 billion, where lawmakers are seeking common ground.
(A2 Televizion)
