Pope Francis, who was hospitalized last week, is suffering from pneumonia in both lungs and the 88-year-old's health condition remains "complex," the Vatican said on February 18.
Francis was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital last Friday with bronchitis after experiencing breathing difficulties, and the Holy See has canceled all of his activities until the weekend.
"Laboratory tests, chest X-rays and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture," the Holy See said in a statement.
The Vatican said that due to a polymicrobial infection and asthmatic bronchitis, the Pope had to use antibiotics. However, after new checks that the Pope had on the afternoon of February 18, according to the Vatican, doctors noticed "double pneumonia, which requires additional medical therapy."
The head of the Catholic Church since 2013, the Argentine Francis was hospitalized after having difficulty reading his speeches in public for several days.
He had previously faced health problems and had undergone surgeries for hernia and colon, and recently used a wheelchair to move due to knee pain./ REL (A2 Televizion)
