Teenage suicides in Japan have risen to their highest levels on record in 2024, although trends across a broader sample of age groups nationwide continue to decline.
According to preliminary findings from the Ministry of Health, 20,268 suicides were recorded in 2024, 1,569 cases less than the previous year and the second lowest figure since statistics began to be compiled in 1978.
Specifically, a total of 13,763 men and 6,505 women committed suicide last year, 527 of whom were minors, surpassing the 2022 record of 514. High school students made up almost 70% of the figure, with 349 people, while high school students were 163 and 15 were elementary school students.
Among the reasons that pushed children to the extreme gesture, according to the research, are school problems, such as low grades or the inability to see a future path, health problems related to depression, and family responsibilities including poor relationships with parents. Based on other studies, dynamics related to social media or online interactions also played a role. (A2 Televizion)
