Iran has imposed temporary countrywide restrictions on internet access, with the country's Ministry of Information and Communications Technology citing security concerns.
"Due to the misuse of the national communications network by the aggressor enemy for military purposes and to endanger the lives and property of innocent people, internet access restrictions have been temporarily imposed by decision of the competent authorities," the Ministry said in a statement, foreign media reported.
According to the statement, access to "public communication services and domestic platforms remains available, and efforts are being made to maintain the quality of services" for people in Iran.
The move comes after NetBlocks, a non-governmental organization that monitors internet governance, previously said that Iran was experiencing a near-total internet blackout. "Network data shows that Iran is now in the midst of a near-total nationwide internet blackout," NetBlocks said in a post on the social media platform 'X'.
The Iranian government has frequently restricted internet access in the country. During nationwide protests in 2022, authorities implemented numerous internet shutdowns in an attempt to suppress dissent against government policies. (A2 Televizion)
