German elections: CDU/CSU conservatives expected to win

The conservative Christian Democratic Union in Germany is expected to be declared the winner in the snap elections held this Sunday.

With the announcement of the first exit polls after the elections, the party began at the CDU headquarters.

Friedrich Merz, who has not held a government role so far, is likely to become the new chancellor of Germany, Europe's largest economy and most populous country.

If exit poll results hold, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has achieved its highest result yet - almost doubling its support since the last election in 2021.

This is a significant projected increase in support for the party, which is likely to now stand as Germany's largest opposition force.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz's center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD) looks set to come in third - a major turnaround from the 2021 election, when it received 25.7% of the vote.

Meanwhile, the Sahra Wageknecht Alliance (BSW) narrowly missed the 5% threshold needed to enter parliament, while the Left party easily passed this threshold, receiving a substantial 8.5%. (A2 Televizion)
