The "disappearance" of the border, Greeks flock to gas stations in

As of January 1, 2025, the Greece-Bulgaria border changed drastically, as Bulgaria and Romania officially joined the Schengen area.

The crossing now takes place without controls or delays, which has caused emotions especially among drivers and passengers, while social networks are filled with photos and comments about the new reality.

At the largest border station of Promachon, the customs buildings are left deserted, while the bars on both sides are permanently raised.

Kilometer-long queues of cars and trucks, which until recently were a daily occurrence, have now disappeared.

But what has grabbed the attention after the "disappearance" of the border between the two countries is the fact that Greek drivers rush to refuel cars in Bulgarian territory, where prices are much lower.

Specifically, the price of gasoline in Bulgaria is around 1.28 per liter, while in Greece it is around 1.80 euros and the price of diesel is equally attractive.

The average price of gasoline in Bulgaria for the period from January 2015 to December 2024 was 1.14 euros per liter, with the lowest price recorded in May 2020 at 0.82 cents and the highest recorded in July 2022 where it went to 1.73 euros per liter .

Compared to the global average price for the same period, Bulgaria still offers fuel at significantly lower prices.

In detail, for a vehicle with a 50 liter tank, the cost of a full tank is 64 euros in Bulgaria and 90 euros in Greece, so 26 euros less. (A2 Televizion)
