Germany does not withdraw from Kosovo, extends the mandate of its troops in KFOR

The German government has decided to extend the mandate of several Bundeswehr missions abroad, including its participation in the NATO peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR.

For the decision to enter into force, it must be approved by the Bundestag. German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius stated that Berlin is reaffirming its continued commitment to peace and stability in the region, German newspaper Zeit reports.

Bundeswehr forces have been stationed in Kosovo since 1999 as part of NATO's KFOR mission.

The current number of German troops in Kosovo remains at 400 soldiers. “The security situation in the country remains fragile,” Kornelius said, Telegraf reports. In 2023, the German contingent was temporarily reinforced due to rising tensions.

"A stable Kosovo is of fundamental importance for Germany and all of Europe," said Kornelius.

Zeit reports that, while KFOR's mission is technically open-ended, its mandate is still presented to the Bundestag for annual approval. (A2 Televizion)
