Four murders in three days have worried all citizens of Kosovo. Two separate cases in Vushtrri and one in Pristina have led to the demand for more commitment in preventing such cases.
The source of all these murders is considered to be the possession of illegal weapons by citizens, which is thought to be as high as 230 thousand.
"The presence of such a large number of weapons in the hands of citizens naturally poses a potential threat to order and security in our country, therefore I assess that as soon as possible, with a well-coordinated policy through the bodies, they should take action to reduce the presence of a large number of weapons in the hands of citizens," said Ardian Bajraktari, lawyer.
Kosovo Police says that in the first two months of this year alone, January and February, 235 weapons of various types and about 3,000 ammunition were confiscated.
During 2024, according to police statistics, 1,537 weapons and 24,000 ammunition were confiscated.
The problem of illegal weapons does not seem easy to solve, but the best way is to follow the chain of where the weapons come from, especially in the hands of young people, and to work with the latter to raise awareness.
“The problem of illegal weapons is a problem that is difficult to eliminate as such, however, their owners must be held accountable for these weapons, both because they possess illegal weapons and for the way they possess them,” said Mentor Vrajolli, Kosovar Center for Security Studies.
Calls for harsher penalties for gun owners are seen as a way that could help reduce the number of cases, but also to pay attention to people with similar criminal histories.
"Penal policies should also be reviewed with special emphasis on the criminal offense of 'unauthorized use of a weapon or possession or control', but also when dealing with criminal offenses, which of course are not a few cases that result in recidivism or repetition of these offenses," said Bajraktari.
During 2024, 17 murders occurred throughout the country, a decrease of over 41% compared to 2023, where 29 murders were recorded.
While for the first three months of this year, in addition to these four cases, one murder occurred in Skenderaj and one in the mountains of the village of Manastirc in Ferizaj. (A2 Televizion)
