Suspected of desecration of the Quran, indictment filed against a man in Prizren

The Kosovo Special Prosecution Office filed an indictment on Tuesday against a suspect accused of inciting discord for desecrating the Muslim holy book, the Quran, months ago.

In a media release, the prosecution identified the suspect only by the initials IP and said he had torn up the Quran in early March of this year near the "Saraçhane" tekke in the southern Kosovo city of Prizren.

"Investigations have revealed that IP tore up and scattered the holy book of Muslims, the Quran, on the ground, causing great anger in the Islamic community and disrupting coexistence between groups with different religious ideologies," the announcement states.

He is formally charged with inciting discord and intolerance, under Article 141, paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code of Kosovo.

The criminal offense of inciting discord and intolerance is punishable by a fine and imprisonment for up to five years, according to the Criminal Code.

But prosecutors have asked the court to order mandatory psychiatric treatment for the suspect in prison.

Prosecutors requested this mandatory psychiatric measure "since his ability, at the time of the commission of the criminal offense, to judge and control his actions was significantly reduced."/ REL (A2 Televizion)
