The Kosovo Special Prosecution announced on Friday that it has filed an indictment against defendant DR, for the criminal offense of "war crime against the civilian population".
The investigation revealed that during the period 7-10 May 1999, the defendant participated in a widespread and organized attack by Serbian military, police and paramilitary forces against the Albanian civilian population in Gjakova, the announcement states.
It is stated there that he acted in collusion with other persons.
"The indictment charges the defendant with responsibility for the murder of three Albanian civilians, who were subsequently physically abused, as well as for the violent expulsion of civilians from their homes, the looting and destruction of property in several neighborhoods of the city," the prosecution announced.
The evidence against the defendant includes testimonies of victims and eyewitnesses, his identification through photographs, reports from the Institute of Forensic Medicine, and other materials collected during the investigation.
The defendant is in custody, while the prosecution said it has requested the continuation of this measure due to the risk of escape.
During the war in Kosovo in 1998/99, over 13,000 civilians were killed, while thousands more disappeared.
Around 1,600 people, mostly Albanians, are still missing.
Over the years, justice authorities in Kosovo have charged or convicted several individuals for war crimes.
