The Basic Court in Pristina on Monday acquitted Serb Gavrillo Milosavljevic, accused of war crimes against the civilian population during the war in Kosovo.
Judge Vesel Ismaili has stated that it has not been proven that the suspect - in his capacity as an official at Dubrava prison - committed the criminal offense for which he was accused, and thus his detention has been terminated, reported Betimi për Drejtësi, a media outlet specializing in the field of the rule of law in Kosovo.
He was indicted on November 29, 2023, and it was mentioned that Milosavljevic, along with several other people, had killed, beaten, mistreated, and tortured Albanian civilian prisoners.
According to the indictment, he was part of a group of Serbian soldiers who fired at prisoners with machine guns, mortars and other weapons, in an operation launched on May 22, 1999, until May 24, 1999, as a result of which 109 prisoners were killed.
In February 2024, another Serb, Zlatan Arsiniqi, was acquitted of war crimes charges. He was accused of participating in the expulsion and forced displacement of the residents of Kamenica, along with members of the Serbian police and paramilitary groups during the war.
The Humanitarian Law Center assessed in the Arsiniqi case that the trial panel of the Basic Court in Pristina had conducted a fair trial.
In the 1998-1999 war in Kosovo, it is believed that over 13,000 civilians were killed, while thousands more disappeared. To this day, over 1,600 people remain missing - most of them Albanians./ REL (A2 Televizion)
