The Serbian government will allocate 170 euros, or 20 thousand dinars, in aid to 5 thousand Serbs in Kosovo. The decision will be implemented from February 1, a few days before the general elections. This action by official Belgrade, which has publicly supported the Serbian List, is seen as an attempt to buy votes for this political party, which is said to have lost the trust of Kosovo Serbs.
"It is pure vote buying, two weeks before the general elections and probably after some measurements that clearly show that the number of 10 reserved seats that the Serbian List had is likely not available to them because at least two of these seats could be won by other parties," said Valdet Hoxha, former deputy interior minister.
In addition to this funding scheme, another state body in Serbia known as the Commissariat for Refugees and Migration has invited Serbs who have the right to vote in Kosovo to vote, while this commissariat will take care of transportation to the polling stations.
"Because the loss of their power on the ground then pushes them to find different methods to restore their power to the masses, to maintain the manipulation of the masses. While in the past the distribution of money and threats was done in an easier form, now they must find alternative and more specialized forms," stated Gurakuç Kuçi from the OCTOPUS Institute.
The Serbian community has ten reserved seats in the Kosovo Assembly, while six Serbian political entities are competing in the February 9 elections.
Official Belgrade is interested in the Serbian List winning all the seats as happened in the last elections for its own interests.
"They have already lost and do not have the same power among Serbs that they had in Kosovo, and they are constantly feeling the danger because Serbia extends its influence on Kosovo's institutions through the Serbian List," Kuçi stressed.
In the last legislature, the Serbian List boycotted all parliamentary proceedings, while its deputies returned to the Assembly every 6 months to maintain their mandates. This party has been described by the current Kosovo Government as criminal because many of its members, including Milan Radoićić, are accused of serious crimes against the state of Kosovo.
