The European Union gives the green light for Italy to bring illegal immigrants to the reception center in Albania. Brussels confirms that it will continue to closely monitor the implementation of the agreement between Tirana and Rome, following the changes recently made through a government decree. The spokesman for the Union for Home Affairs, Markus Lammert, said that according to EU information, the center will operate based on Italian national law, which is consistent with European law, therefore it is assessed that there is no obstacle to the implementation of the pact.

"We are aware of the latest developments regarding this decree and the center in Albania. We are in contact with the Italian authorities and will continue to monitor the implementation of the protocol. According to our information, Italian national law will be applied to this center, as has been the case so far regarding asylum applications. In principle, this is in line with European Union law. We will continue to monitor the implementation of the protocol and the new guidelines, while staying in contact with the Italian authorities. As for innovative solutions, we have said that the EU is ready to consider them, but always in accordance with international law and respect for fundamental rights," said Markus Lammert, EU spokesman, writes A2 CNN.

On the other hand, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called Albania's model a success and said it is gaining more and more support. In a video message at the Border Security Summit in London, Meloni stated that initially the model was criticized, but now the EU is also proposing the creation of centers for the repatriation of migrants in third countries.

Meanwhile, the Italian center in Albania is changing its function and expanding with the decree approved on Friday by the Council of Ministers in Rome. However, Italy is still waiting for the European Court of Justice to rule on the issue of the detention of immigrants and the indications for safe countries: an issue that has been at the center of controversy and tension for months after the statements of Italian magistrates, who have turned back every immigrant transferred to Gjadra.
