The Special Prosecution Office announces that through an official letter sent to the Ministry of Interior, it requests the accountability of the persons who prevented the State Police from acting to maintain order and security during the rally of supporters of Mayor Erion Veliaj.
"SPAK has requested through official letter with protocol no. 5458, dated 14.02.2025: Taking measures by the Ministry of Interior and the General Directorate of the State Police to hold accountable the persons responsible for the lack of reaction. A reasoned explanation for the lack of measures as in similar cases in the incident of 12.02.2025," the announcement states.
SPAK also considers the State Police's stance on the case to be a flagrant violation of legal obligations and a serious violation of the independence of justice institutions.
"The failure to act to guarantee the security of prosecutors and judges as well as justice institutions also contradicts international standards as well as those related to the conditions of the Stabilization and Association Agreement with the European Union for the protection of the rule of law. The letter has been addressed not only to the Ministry of Interior, the General Directorate of the State Police, but also to the Police Supervision Agency, as well as to the High Prosecutorial Council and the Delegation of the European Union to Albania for information," SPAK informs.
This request to the Ministry of Interior to find those responsible comes shortly after the GJKKO and SPAK addressed the institution led by Ervin Hoxha, expressing concern over the lack of response in guaranteeing security and public order, before and during the court session to verify the security measure for Veliaj.
"The court session was held to question the persons under investigation EV, AX, EA, GS, MP, FB, and Sh.F to verify the conditions and criteria for determining the measure and the security needs. During the protest held on 12.02.2025, the protesters prevented the movement of prosecutors, judges and staff by attacking vehicles and using insults and threats against them. Based on the reports of the Republic Guard employees, repeated requests for assistance were made to the State Police to guarantee the external perimeter of SPAK and the Special Courts, by establishing a security cordon of police forces. This practice has been followed previously in protests held near the SPAK and Special Courts premises," the justice institutions highlight. (A2 Televizion)
