The Berat Court today issued arrest warrants for three detainees suspected of placing 21 tons of pesticide-laced mandarins on the market, which had been returned from Croatia.
The hearing for the determination of the security measure was held with open doors. At the end of it, the Berat court deemed the arrests valid and left the prison arrest measure in force for the 3 arrested persons, Arben Dyli, Elton Tafaj and Elson Tahiraj.
During the hearing, defense lawyers called the detainees victims of a competitive trade war aimed at harming local traders. Arben Dyl's defense lawyer even cast doubt on the veracity of the Croatian state's analyses, writes A2 CNN.
While in his speech before the trial panel, exporter Arben Dyli stated that he did not know that the AKU had to be notified after the mandarin product was returned.
He notified the farmers, one from Gorica and the other from Saranda, to take back the goods.
Arrested farmer Elton Tafa said that he was wronged by the AKU after it told him that the mandarins were spoiled and rotten, so he threw them in the Dimal landfill.
"It broke my heart when I threw them away because it was my sweat," he said. Tafa had argued with Dylin because he suspected that the mandarins turned upside down were not his, but he took it for granted and threw them in the trash.
Despite the defense and statements of the arrested, the court imposed the measure of imprisonment. (A2 Televizion)
