Former Foreign Minister Edmond Panariti says that Albanians must be very careful as major conflicts occur in the world, as the stories of the past risk repeating themselves.

Invited to "Debates by Alba Alishani" on A2 CNN, Panariti said that every time the Albanian issue is discussed at large tables, which are usually held after the end of major conflicts, Albanians have emerged as losers. "We must be very careful, because if Albanian issues go to large levels, to large negotiation tables, we have never emerged as winners," said Panariti.

He said that precisely because of history, Serbia is trying to avoid a bilateral solution with Kosovo and seeks to send the issue to the highest levels of world politics. "That is why I have always insisted that Kosovo and Serbia should have resolved this through dialogue, through the implementation of the Franco-German plan. But without a doubt, Vučić has not been interested in dialogue," Panariti said, writes A2 CNN.

"He also undermined and sabotaged the agreement in North Macedonia, he refused to sign the Franco-German plan. It was also the weakness of the EU emissaries, who were not forced to leave the table without signing. Because Vučić's agenda was different, he thought that the issue of Serbia's ambitions in relation to Kosovo should be resolved at another level, waiting for the great reconfiguration of the world order and he thought of taking it out of the rut of dialogue, but leading it to a solution at the highest levels. And history has always shown that when our national issues have gone to high tables, we have come out lost."

At the 1913 Ambassadorial Conference and the 1919 Peace Conference after the end of World War I, Albania, although officially recognized as a state, lost almost half of its territory inhabited by Albanians, due to negotiations between the Great Powers, some of which protected the interests of neighboring countries such as Serbia and Greece. Even at the end of World War II, at the Yalta Conference, Albania was left almost completely out of the discussions and was placed in the “eastern camp” without any attempt to change the situation.
