Former President Ilir Meta was informed today of the closure of the investigations by the Special Prosecution Office into the SMI lobbying file in the US and the CEZ-DIA affair. Meta has been in detention for 9 months, on charges of corruption, money laundering and concealment of assets.
Defense attorney Kujtim Cakrani said that there is nothing new from the CEZ-DIA file in the investigation that has been going on for almost 7 years. According to him, SPAK has no evidence against Ilir Meta.
"Even after 6 years on the CEZ-DIA case, there is nothing new about the CEZ-DIA case or the lobbying. Mr. Meta has given his explanations and has requested in-depth investigations from the prosecution to discover who made the payments. The prosecutor has no information about where the payments came from, which bank they came from and which account. This was the reason why we took so long. Meta has explained in detail the 3 charges he is accused of. It was a calm, even friendly session. We want to know who did the lobbying and who made the payments. CEZ-DIA is a serious charge because it is not proven that Mr. Meta has income and has accumulated wealth. There is no evidence to prove that the charges against Mr. Meta are serious. There is no criminal fact. The procedure body says that we will resolve it in court. We will go to a regular trial", stated Meta's lawyer. (A2 Televizion)
